Ask Sujith: which classic car should I buy?

I’m looking to buy a new car, preferably a classic while they’re still around. Of course, I don’t want to spend too much on it! Any suggestions?

The VW MK1 Golf GTI. As far as originals are concerned, this is hands down one of the greatest of all time. I’ve gone on and on about it here, so I’ll spare you the details and get to the bottom line.

I’d say if you’re getting anything that’s less than $7,000 and the car’s not exhaustively damaged, it’s definitely a good shout. Just make sure you get it properly inspected, fix whatever needs to be fixed, and she’s ready to hit the road.

Having said that, I wouldn’t pay more than that amount, even on a GTI. It’s just not worth it. You’re better off getting a regular golf, swapping in a 1.8T engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Lower it, get a nice set of BBS and you’re golden. Whoever said classics had to be from the 70s? You can make do with what you have and make it your own!
