Best of the V12

Best of the V12 series

Last week we sang an ode to a dying breed, the last of its kind, an inspired mechanical feat that some would say revolutionised engines for the better. We will sorely miss the sound, the power and the ‘status’ of the almighty V12 engine.

Glory to the V12!

But it’s not gone yet, and we want to make sure we give it due fan service before it hangs up the pistons and takes its place in an auto museum, somewhere in an underground facility off the coast of Costa Rica, where petrol heads will unite in the EV era and ululate its wail in unison.

Today, we continue our tributes, kicking off a countdown of 5 truly notable rides that will go up in the automotive hall of fame for years to come.

Every week we’ll be giving you a hot new 12-cylinder ride, so watch this space!

5. The first one

Another golden oldie…

The V12 OG is none other than the Twin Six Packard from 1916. Two banks of 6 L-head cylinders set at a 60-degree angle made up one of the most revered engines of the time, and cemented Packard’s place in Automobile history.

4. The Luxurious one

It’s like the George Clooney of cars

Take your seat among the stars, and fish out the bubbly as you enjoy a smooth, refined and utterly elegant ride in one of the most luxurious V12s to ever have existed.

3. The barely legal one

Pulling all the stops…

The TVR Cerbera Speed 12 is to the McLaren F1 what Salieri was to Mozart. They couldn’t surpass the OG Speed King, but they sure as hell made a statement, and that’s why they deserve to be on this list.

2. The tragic one

Destiny’s prodigal child

Ford and Ferrari dominated Le Mans in the 60s. But it could have been different had the Jaguar XJ13 been ready for racing action in ’66. Alas, it was the most beautiful car to never hit the track.

1. The weird one

Is it a plane? Is it a car? It’s…Tramontana R!

There’s an air of mystery surrounding this one. For all we know, Superman himself built it from scrap extraterrestrial metal and sent it to Earth. It’s weird, it’s sexy, and it’s in at number one on our list.
