Is this the year of the Lambo? It was voted the Middle East’s sports car of the year, gave us the spectacular Huracan EVO RWD Spyder, a track-only hyper car and a friggin’ boat. But why stop there? When you’re Lamborghini, you can do it all, right? And that’s exactly what they’ve done with the new Lamborghini Sian roadster.
We’re seriously impressed with this one. It’s an open-topped variant on last year’s Sian coupe, but it’s so much more. Using the same Aventador-based platform, this one combines the raw superiority of a naturally aspirated 6.5L V-12 engine with a supercapacitor, to give you a hybrid of epic proportions, delivering a whopping 774 ponies.
Now, the supercapacitor may not hold much energy per se, but it does offer far greater energy density than a conventional power source, making it three times more powerful than your standard lithium-ion battery of the same weight.
The supercapacitor system has some dope AF advantages. Firstly, there’s the ultrafast regenerative braking, which means you recharge every time you hit them brakes hard. It also produces extra torque for smoother transmission changes on its single-clutch automated-manual shift.
What’s more, this one’s pretty stealthy, too. The electric motor disengages at speeds over 130 km/h, making it 10 per cent quicker in stop-and-go manoeuvres, which is enough to power the car at low speeds, allowing for silent manoeuvring with the engine switched off. Damn.
This is a roadster like no other. For one, it doesn’t have a roof, with Lamborghini taking an all-too-literal bent on “sky’s the limit”.
It’s also a throwback to the Countach. Those with a keen eye will notice the rearward-running periscopio line from the cockpit ending in “airstreamers” behind both seats, utterly reminiscent of its famous predecessor.
If we’ve tempted you into getting one, you may have missed the boat already. Lamborghini only produced 19 of these bad boys and, despite having 7-figure price tags, they’ve all sold out. You know what they say, want a new limited-edition Lamborghini, gotta move as fast as one to get it.
The new Sian roadster is a seriously impressive addition to Lamborghini’s already impressive lineup, and we can continue to expect great things from the dominant super car extraordinaire.
